About our study

HRV

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been established in the research literature as a valid indicator of autonomic functioning in relation to a variety of disorders and for performance enhancement (Lehrer & Gravirtz, 2014; Lalanza, et. al., 2023) HRV will be used in the present study as a physiological measure of autonomic functioning.

Primary Research Question:

Will autonomic functioning improve as a result ofLectio Divina practice? Further, experienced Lectio Divina practitioners will be compared to inexperienced/novice practitioners for impacts on HRV.  Lastly, in a randomly controlled study of N=100 novice practitioners HRV will be examined between those who practice Lectio Divina including or excluding a contemplative phase.

Data Collection:

Technology in the form of an ear sensor and a phone app for measuring HRV will be used from the HeartMath company.  Each participant will receive the equipment and be directed to training videos on how to use it.

Data is then recorded through the phone app and through a weekly response to a very brief Qualtrics survey.
